Hanoi to cooperate with France in regenerating the Old Quarter

In the morning of November 18th, Chairman of Hanoi People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung had a courtesy meeting with Mr.Bertrand Lortholady, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of France to Vietnam on the occasion of his new office term to discuss boosting cooperation between the two sides.

French Ambassador Bertrand Lortholary thanked Hanoi People’s Committee for its effective support in various cooperative projects between France and Hanoi in the areas of heritage conservation, urban planning, and installation of environmental monitoring stations in Hanoi. Especially, French experts contributed to researching and constructing the project of the first metro in Hanoi, which links Hanoi Railway Station with the city’s western area. The Ambassador appreciated this project’s  practical significance and desired the city leader for further supporting and promoting the important project’s implementation.

Chairman Nguyen Duc Chung congratulated the Ambassador on his new position and expressed his desire the Ambassador will continue to be a bridge for bilateral relations between Vietnam and France as well as Hanoi and Paris. The Chairman affirmed that Hanoi will create the most favorable conditions for implementing projects of regenerating infrastructure in the city and support firms in investing and transferring technology in this area.

Chairman Chung expected France will continue to support Hanoi in expanding environmental surveillance project to improve the air and water quality in the city, raising people’s living standard. Besides, Hanoi authority is particularly interested in regenerating Hanoi Old Quarter and areas around Hoan Kiem Lake. The Chairman affirmed that France, with rich experience in rehabilitating architecture and managing old houses and towns, will be the city’s leading potential partner.

During the meeting, Ambassador Bertrand Lortholary thanked the Chairman for his warm welcome and confirmed the areas of health, environment, urban transport to be the top priorities of France to cooperate with Hanoi. On his position, the Ambassador affirmed to do his best for the successful and efficient the bilateral cooperation.
